Artist Statement
The exploration of the idea that everything beautiful is ugly and everything ugly is beautiful has become a fundamental component of the way images are resourced within the work. The imagery is created from photos of anything I find interesting or items I come across and are made spontaneously and intuitively.
Due to this approach when creating artwork, the imagery is chaotic, messy and exciting as it creates a method of working which is always in a state of flux. It is made purposely this way so that the work embodies a form of organised chaos. I want the works to look experimental and perhaps not entirely ‘finished’ visually. This gives the work an uncomfortable vibe. Although, due to it being created in this way on purpose, the uncomfortable and comfortable elements are balanced; just like my play between the beautiful and the ugly.
The colours chosen in the works in order to capture this idea are very important. By using pretty, bright and bold colours and placing them together in a way that is often offensive or crude, they have been transformed from being pretty or beautiful into ugly or ‘in your face’ colours. The resulting work is beautiful yet ugly and obnoxious. This is a playful approach to beautiful versus ugly and that not everything is what it seems.
